Ponds are the most fabulous place for discovering all kinds of wonderful things! There are plants, insects, birds... and, of course, beautiful green frogs. Sometimes, one can even find fish, such as the flamboyant koi. But the koi has not always been king of the pond. There was a time when it was just an ordinary black-and-white fish. This was before Bekko, a young koi, fell in love with Matsou, the pretty frog. Here is a colourful love story like no other.

The book was originally published in French and received excellent reviews

“One of the best French-Canadian children’s books of the year.” -- Magazine Protégez-vous (a consumer guide magazine)

“A great book for the summer vacations. One of the top ten children’s books of the summer. ” --Journal de Montréal & Journal de Québec

“A beautiful love story. I loved it! ” -- Christine Michaud, TVA

The Koi and the Frog edition by Richard Plourde Fabrice Boulanger Children eBooks

All right, this concept stretches my imagination -- and keeps me childlike! There have been many frog stories in children's fables, mostly frogs relating with humans and toads. But with a fish? That's just a different class altogether -- cold-blooded, you know. Just like a frog. So they have that in common at least. But what about all the differences? Can Bekko the Koi's love overcome those differences? Can his beloved Matsou the Frog accept this strange love?

Their first meeting turns into an all-day conversation. Wow! The next meeting is even more romantic, with much laughter and sunset watching. For many more days "froggette" and the koi share much togetherness. But frog Matsou has a secret, one she doesn't want to tell anyone. She is afraid that Bekko will stop loving her. That secret makes for a another layer in the story, reminiscent of fairy tales of transformation. Most intriguing. Young readers/listeners will love it!

The story's lesson: It's not what you appear like on the outside that matters to those who love you; it's what's inside.

This story was so adorable. I loved Bekko the fish and his persistance and devotion to Matsou the frog. He stayed by her side even when she was sad and even when she hibernated - visiting her every day even though she couldn't know if he was really there or not.

The learning lesson kicks in when he hears the story of her childhood and her wish gone bad. A very fun tale that kids will really enjoy.

Meet Bekko, a young but sad koi. Why is he sad? He is secretly in love with Matsou, a frog! One day Bekko pluck up the courage to speak to Matsou. Spending time together, just enjoying each other's company the time comes when winter is approaching. Bekko promises to visit Matsou every day even though she will be asleep. How do things turn out? Matsou has a secret! What is it? This is a VERY cute, well-written short chapter book (4 chapters) that is great as a read aloud or for independent readers.

Book provided in exchange for an honest review. This is a keeper in our house! Thanks, Liz
The lyrical picturesque writing created images in my mind. Sweet Koi the fish, and Matsou the frog, fall in love "fingers holding fin." These two characters are brought to life through the author's depth of story and believable well-played out romance. Yet it is a picture book for children with only a few wonderful black and white illustrations. We are left to fill in the color with our imaginations and the author's descriptions. I most liked the humor in spots and laughed out loud, it was witty. Helps children to see how embracing their own uniqueness and that of others can lead to true happiness. A good lesson as so many of us struggle trying to be something we are not instead of accepting the beauty in ourselves. The Magic of Christmas-The Magic of Love Beautifully Illustrated Poems for Children and the Young at Heart
This was a wonderfully written love story of a Koi fish and a frog. Yes I said love story.

It's about our differences, how we see ourselves, how others portray us, how we get along and finally - true love. When the young koi fish Bekko sees the frog Matsoi he is instantly mesmerized by her. He knows that love between a fish and a frog is a ridiculous thought yet he can't not e with her. He introduces himself and they spend many days together. The both fall madly in love but Matsui is hiding a deep secret.

To find out what it is and what it all means you will have to read the story. I promise you will not be disappointed. This is a story that you will be talking about long after you have finished reading it. A well written, enjoyable story that brought a tear to my eye and a smile to my face.

ugh! I loved this book! Way more than I thought I would.

When the author contacted me with a pitch for a possible review of his children's book about a koi fish that falls in love with a frog I have to admit, I was pretty interested. Anyone who knows me from my other sites and reviews knows that I have a weakness for children's books. Especially picture books. I was ready to send a quick note letting him know that I would be happy to review it. And then. I saw it. Right as I scrolled down and began to click on the "reply" arrow was an attached .mobi file of this book. To me, this always screams of less than stellar material. The author is afraid that you'll say no so they attach it anyways and guilt you into reading it. (I don't know if that is at all true, but that's just how it feels to me.)

So, with slight hesitation, I went ahead and zipped this title on over to my kindle and hoped for the best. And what do you know I was pleasantly surprised. Not only did I love the story and the lessons that it teaches (looking different doesn't mean you're hideous & someone will find your differences beautiful; and the topic of interracial relationships.) But what surprised me most is that this isn't a picture book but a chapter book! What little illustrations that there are are adorable and done really well.

The Koi and the Frog is a book that I would love to have in my real library collection as it would be a great bedtime story to share with a little one and will be anxiously waiting for a print version.
